Dermal Filler Details

Juvederm injections are safe and natural cosmetic dermal filler treatments made of hyaluronic acid, a natural substance that already exists in the human body. Unlike other hyaluronic acid injections, Juvederm injections are not made with animal products. This reduces the possibility of contracting an infection or having an allergic reaction.

Aging

The number of cells in our skin reduces over the years. As cell reproduction slows, less collagen is produced. These changes make skin less elastic and less able to recover from repeated stretching, scrunching and folding that occurs while making expressions or even sleeping. Unable to rebound, skin begins to wrinkle and sag.

In addition, as we get older the cells that make up our skin become thinner and less able to hold moisture, giving our skin a drier, more crackled appearance. Fat cells beneath the skin reduce in size and cause the skin to wrinkle and sag even more.

Fillers

Juvederm maintain their shape using the body’s own moisture. The hyaluronic acid is hydrophilic or “water loving”, meaning it pulls moisture from your body to the skin. As hyaluronic acid gradually degrades, each molecule binds to more water and over time the same volume can be maintained with less hyaluronic acid. This ability of hyaluronic acid to bind to water is what helps provide lasting results.

The risks of injectable fillers are minimal and serious reactions are rare. The process of receiving dermal filler injections causes only minor discomfort. Dr. Tsai uses the most up to date techniques to minimize discomfort during your treatment.

After treatment some people experience some redness or swelling. This will normally last less than seven days. Sunbathing and cold outdoor activities should be avoided until any redness or swelling disappears. As with any injection, bruising is also a possibility. Dr. Tsai recommends avoiding aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, and high doses of Vitamin E for several weeks prior to receiving hyaluronic acid fillers to reduce your chances of bruising.

Juvederm injections can be used in conjunction with other anti-aging skin treatments such as Intense Pulsed Light (IPL or “Photofacial”) skin rejuvenation, Botox injections, or most skin care products. You should not have Juvederm injections if you are under 18 years old. Ask Dr. Tsai does not treatment patients if they are pregnant or breastfeeding.
